FAQ

Do I need to be licensed to apply for a technician role?

For most of our field technician positions, a valid Ontario Gas Technician licence (G2 minimum) is required. For the Air Conditioning Technician role, a 313D refrigeration certificate is also needed. That said, if you're currently working toward your licence and have strong hands-on experience, we encourage you to apply — we do support apprentices in some cases. Always mention your current certifications and any in-progress training in your application.

What areas do your technicians service?

Our service area covers Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Scarborough, and surrounding regions. Technicians are assigned routes based on their home location where possible to minimize long commutes. A valid Ontario driver's licence and reliable transportation are required for all field roles — we provide fully stocked company vehicles for use during work hours.

What does a typical work schedule look like?

Most field technician roles follow a Monday–Friday schedule, with occasional Saturdays during peak seasons (summer and winter). We make every effort to keep on-call rotations fair and predictable — we don't believe in burning out our team with unreasonable hours. Office roles are primarily Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM. Specific schedules are discussed during the interview process so there are no surprises.

How long does the hiring process take?

We move quickly because we know good candidates don't stay available for long. Typically, you can expect a phone screen within 1–3 business days of applying, followed by an in-person interview within a week. From first contact to a formal offer usually takes 1–2 weeks. Once you accept, onboarding and your start date are typically arranged within another 1–2 weeks. We'll keep you informed at every step.

Do you offer training or support for professional development?

Absolutely. We believe in investing in our people for the long term. SMIL HVAC supports ongoing training through manufacturer certification programs, industry workshops, and assistance with upgrading your gas licence (e.g., from G2 to G1). New employees go through a structured onboarding period with a senior technician mentor. If there's a course or certification that would make you better at your job, we're open to discussing support for it.

I don't see a role that fits me — can I still apply?

Yes, and we genuinely encourage it. We keep general applications on file and regularly reach out to candidates when new positions open up. Simply select "Other / General Application" in the position dropdown on our application form, tell us about your background and what type of role you're looking for, and attach your resume.
