Every air conditioning system falls into one of four types. Central air conditioning and ductless mini-splits use a split air conditioner configuration — an outdoor condenser paired with a separate indoor unit. SEER ratings measure energy efficiency for all four types.
Central air conditioning connects an outdoor condenser to an indoor air handler through refrigerant lines. The air handler is the core component of the HVAC system, distributing conditioned air via ductwork throughout the home. BTU (British thermal unit) capacity must match the home’s cooling load through a proper load calculation, not a square-footage rule.
Key factors assessed in every central air conditioning installation:
Ductless AC systems serve homes without existing ductwork and rooms where extending ducts is not practical. A mini split air conditioner uses inverter technology and connects one outdoor compressor to wall-mounted indoor units through a small refrigerant line.
Key advantages of ductless mini-split installation:
Window air conditioner — suited to rooms where a ductless or central system is not available; a 5,000 BTU window-mounted unit covers about 150 sq ft, a 12,000 BTU unit handles up to 550 sq ft. Proper insulation around the frame prevents warm air infiltration; units installed without manufacturer-supplied foam strips consistently run below their rated BTU output.

Most central AC installations are complete in one day. A single-zone ductless mini-split takes 4-6 hours. Jobs with ductwork modifications may need two days. Smile HVAC confirms the full timeline in writing before work begins.
Verify TSSA gas certification and refrigeration licensing, WSIB coverage, and liability insurance. Smile HVAC in-home technicians hold active licences, and the company carries $5,000,000 in liability insurance.
New systems must meet Canada’s minimum 13.4 SEER2 standard under the Energy Efficiency Regulations. New equipment must use R-32 or R-454B refrigerants under Canada’s HFC phase-down obligations. Gas compliance is handled by TSSA-certified technicians; refrigerant work is performed under a separate refrigeration licence on every installation.
