As one of the most advanced methods of filtration, a reverse osmosis system is one of the most widely used. Water purified in this way has 98% dissolved solids removed, making it healthier to drink. Besides an R.O. system, the only other way to reduce TDS is with a water distiller. However, it is less efficient than an R.O. system.

Here are other ways it can help:

  • Contaminants dissolved in water are reduced
  • Sodium is reduced
  • Improved taste and odor
  • Comparatively more environmentally friendly than bottled water
  • Simple to install and maintain
  • Designed to fit under the kitchen sink

What is the Reverse Osmosis System

Water is filtered through a membrane that is semipermeable through reverse osmosis when pressure is applied. To provide clean drinking water, water flows right from one side to another. Freshwater produced by the permeation process is called permeate. Water left over after concentration is often referred to as wastewater or brine.

Water molecules can pass through semipermeable membranes, but contaminants cannot. As water passes through it, it becomes even more concentrated so that both sides are at equilibrium.

Contaminants cannot enter the less concentrated part of the membrane when reverse osmosis is used. As an example, reverse osmosis leaves behind the salt when it applies pressure.

How does Reverse Osmosis Systems Work?

By forcing water through a semipermeable membrane, reverse osmosis removes dissolved solids. A prefilter removes chlorine and sediment from the water before it is pushed through a semipermeable membrane by a reverse osmosis system.

In addition to the R.O. membrane, the drinking water is polished by a postfilter before entering dedicated faucets. The number of prefilters and post-filters in reverse osmosis systems determines the number of stages.

It is a system that relies mainly on a reverse osmosis membrane, along with other kinds of filtration. In general, R.O. systems usually have three to five filtration stages.

Besides the reverse osmosis membrane, all R.O. systems also contain sediment and carbon filters. Filters are generally classified as pre-or post filters according to whether they pass through water before or after it goes through a membrane.

Each type of system has one or more of the filters below:

  • The membrane is semipermeable and removes up to 98% of the total dissolved solids (TDS).
  • Water with a carbon filter is free from contaminants such as volatile organic compounds, chlorine, and other pollutants that can give the water a sour taste.
  • A sediment filter reduces particles such as dirt, dust, and rust.

Water first passes through a prefilter before entering an R.O. system. In the prefiltration step, sediment and chlorine are removed so that the R.O. membrane does not get clogged or damaged by sediment or chlorine. This prevents you from needing an R.O. system repair from time to time.

Water then goes through the reverse osmosis membrane wherein all dissolved particles are removed, even the smallest ones.

The filtered water flows into a storage tank, where it’s held until required. In a reverse osmosis system, water is filtered till the storage tank is complete, and then the system shuts off.

As soon as you turn on the drinking water faucet, water flows out of its storage tank through a post-filter to polish it further.

Benefits of Reverse Osmosis Systems

The tap water in your home can be filled with various things, including sediment and harmful contaminants. Contaminants in water can make it smell like rotten eggs or taste sour, but others can also harm your health over time.

A reverse osmosis system produces better, safer water that reduces the chances of contamination. The quality of the water is better than that of bottled water. Even if it is filtered, bottled water may still contain minerals and contaminants. Many of the pollutants found in tap water can be removed by reverse osmosis.

Here are some contaminants that can be removed using an R.O. system:

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria
  • Nitrates
  • Lead
  • Particulates
  • Mercury

Constantly purchasing single-use water bottles can become expensive and inconvenient. Using an R.O. system, you can provide everyone at home with filtered water that is of high quality at all times.

Water that has not been filtered can contain contaminants like sulfur and magnesium, which can change the taste or smell of your water. Having an R.O. system can help you and your family enjoy better-tasting, better-smelling water.

You’ll have no worries drinking from the tap, and it won’t affect the taste of your drinks and food.

A large number of plastic bottles are not properly recycled, even though plastic is a recyclable material. You can also benefit the environment with an R.O. system.

These are just a few ways:

  • Filtered water is always available to you.
  • Eliminate single-use plastic bottles that are harmful to the environment.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint.

You can treat your water needs more efficiently and environmentally friendly with a reverse osmosis system.

R.O. systems deliver better-tasting water 24 hours a day and ensure that your home is always supplied with fresh, clean water. Using reusable pitchers saves you money by reducing the need to buy single-use water bottles and filters for them. When you invest in R.O. technology, you save time and money. Get responsible drinking, cleaning, or cooking water without ever having to leave your home.

Reverse Osmosis Systems Ontario

The best way to purify your drinking water is with a residential reverse osmosis system. Here are three best-selling reverse osmosis systems in Ontario:

  • Rainfresh Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) System
  • McLeod’s Water Hero 385 Drinking Water System
  • Goldline Reverse Osmosis System with 50 Gallons Per Day

System lifespan is usually between 10 and 15 years. Despite the long lifespan of the R.O. system itself, the membranes and filters need replacing regularly. Prefilters and post-filters should be changed every six months to a year. Replace your R.O. membrane every 2-4 years, depending on your water conditions.

Reverse Osmosis Systems Repair

Although systems can last up to 15 years, reverse osmosis repair can be unavoidable from time to time. It’s better to have it done as soon as possible to reduce any risks from drinking water. If you suspect that only a part of the system needs to be fixed, why not try for reverse osmosis pump repair. There is also reverse osmosis faucet repair available, so you don’t have to replace your whole system.
